After a year in business I have decided to re-brand myself and relaunch the blog and website. As my 1st year in business began drawing to a close I was thinking of new ways to market my photography and a few issues kept coming up when I talked to other professionals I would meet. Because of this I decided to write this post to help out other photographers that may be having similar issues or looking for advice before they start their own business. However none of the below lessons I learned are strictly related to photography. They could apply to any business.
- My domain name (WorkmanPhoto.com) is a bad one for a few reasons.
- It uses an abbreviation of Photography instead of the whole name.
- Another photographer owns a domain that is too similar and clients could easily find their site over mine. - My current company name (Workman Photography) is bad for recognition
- There are a number of photographers with the last name of Workman – this makes it hard to stand out
- The name is too generic and you could easily substitute myself for another photographer (similar to the above issue). This is bad because as a boutique type business I am selling myself as much as I am selling my photography.
With all that said you can find my re-branded website at devinworkman.com and the new blog is located at devinworkman.com/blog. Looking forward to seeing everyone over there.
